The Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences (MCOPS), a pillar of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education, stands out among India's premier institutions for pharmacy education. Course Details

B.Pharm

BPharm (Bachelor of Pharmacy)

Post-independence, pharmacy education in India has undergone tremendous changes to meet the requirements of industry and the community at large. The Diploma in Pharmacy is able to meet the requirements of community and hospital stores only partly. The degree program (BPharm) is developed to address all other demands of the profession of pharmacy. However, BPharm education today is facing the challenge of meeting the changing needs the of industry. The four-year BPharm course offered by Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, is prepared considering the needs of the industry, which gives more impetus for skill development. Thus, BPharm graduates can don the roles like Industrial Pharmacist (Manufacturing, Packaging, Quality Control, and Quality Assurance), Hospital and Community Pharmacist (Dispensing of Medicines and Counselling of patients), Sales and Distribution executive (Detailing to Doctors and Bulk Distribution of Medicines), Academic Pharmacist (Training Diploma in Pharmacy Students). With the higher qualification, MPharm, a person could land jobs in the pharma industry in several niche areas, including research, regulatory affairs, new formulation development, marketing, and administration. With experience, an aspirant can move up the ladder to occupy senior positions in pharmaceutical companies getting hefty pay and perks.

Duration : 4 Years (8 semesters).


BPharm (Lateral)

MCOPS has been offering this to all the qualified Diploma in Pharmacy holders ever since the Pharmacy Council of India commenced the lateral entry system for the benefit of DPharm qualified people.

 The curriculum includes:

D.Pharm

D Pharm (Diploma in Pharmacy)

When the profession of pharmacy was developed in the country way back in 1960s, there was a demand for the qualified pharmacists, in order to cater to the needs of the then profession of pharmacy, a short version of pharmacy program namely Diploma in Pharmacy (DPharm) was developed and offered to the students with SSLC/Xth qualification. Later, in 1990s, the minimum qualification for DPharm admission was raised to PUC/Pre-degree/10+2. Thus a large number of students persuaded their interest in the profession of pharmacy through DPharm and registered themselves are pharmacists. These registered pharmacists confined themselves either to community or hospital pharmacy stores.

M.Pharm

M. Pharm (Master of Pharmacy)

Master of Pharmacy (M. Pharm) is a two-year postgraduate program in pharmacy. Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm) program educates a graduate student in the sciences of various fields of pharmacy such as industry, marketing, practice, community, drug discovery etc., just to name a few. However, a graduate lacks in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience in psychomotor skills in the specialized areas of the profession of pharmacy.

Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, with a view to making a student face the challenges in the specialized areas of pharmacy profession, has been offering M. Pharm program in eleven specializations for several years while the following links describe the scope of the individual master's programs offered by MCOPS.

Pharm D

Pharm D (Doctor of Pharmacy)

Pharmacy education in India has been primarily focused on the pharma industry, in order to achieve self-sufficiency in medicines at affordable prices. Advent of globalization, penetration of the Internet, increasing western influence and rising patient expectations have led to the Pharmacy Council of India introducing PharmD in 2008, with pharmaceutical care as its primary educational focus.  PharmD is the first professional degree, and a prerequisite for licensing to practice as a pharmacist in many countries. Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences is among the pioneers in having introduced PharmD from the very beginning, supported by a team of teachers with excellent international exposure at leading universities and health centers of USA and Canada.  The multi-speciality clinical environment provides an exemplary training ground for practice-based pharmacy education. PharmD curriculum focuses on core pharmacy courses in the first two years, followed by four years in the clinical setting.

PharmD students are fully integrated into the multi-disciplinary, multi-speciality health care team of 2032 bedded Kasturba Hospital from the fourth year, concluding with a  first-rate comprehensive muti-speciality internship in the final year. Interns may also train themselves at other recognized centres in India or abroad for a maximum of three months. PharmD trains students to work in hospital settings, relevant industry environments and to pursue higher degrees or clinical research in the international setting.

Duration : 5 years + 1 year internship


PharmD Post Baccalaureate

This three-year program provides opportunity for the B Pharm graduates to acquire practice-based Pharm D (PB). As mentioned earlier, the first two years consist of coursework, followed by one year of internship, which is similar to that of regular Pharm D.  This program functions as a bridge between traditional B Pharm and regular Pharm D by advancing professional skills and career options in clinical practice and research. 

PharmD (PB) students are fully integrated into the multi-disciplinary, multi-specialty health care team of 2032 bedded Kasturba Hospital from the first year, concluding with a first-rate comprehensive multi-specialty internship in the final year. Interns may also train themselves at other recognized centres in India or abroad for a maximum of three months. PharmD (PB) trains students to work in hospital settings, and relevant industry environments and to pursue higher degrees or clinical research in the international setting.

Duration : 2 years + 1 year internship

Certificate course

Certificate course in Health Data Analysis

  • To provide theoretical grounding and hands-on experience in health data analysis using the R software platform.
  • To help the participants plan for data exploration, visualization, and analysis with appropriate packages within R environment. 
  • To enable the participants to effectively analyze their research data and appropriately present their results for the respective audiences and publications.

Duration: 4 weeks


Certificate Course on Introduction to Medical Writing Program in Pharmaceutical Science 

The course focuses on covering the fundamental concepts in clinical trials, adequate information on regulatory requirements for the conduct of clinical trials, and the knowledge about the diverse profession of medical writing. The course offered is for 32 hours and it includes resources such as online lectures, reading materials, self-directed learning modules, and evaluation in the form of quizzes and assignments. The course is developed with the help of experts working in industry to help prepare the candidates for a career in clinical research and medical writing. 


Certificate in Translational Research
