About College
The history of the University of Kerala is deeply intertwined with the history of the state itself. Founded in 1937, it was one of the first 16 universities established in India. Originally known as the University of Travancore, it was created during the era of the princely state of Travancore, which is now part of southern Kerala and some neighboring regions of Tamil Nadu. The university was established by a decree from Maharajah Sri Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, who became its first Chancellor. The first Vice-Chancellor was Sir C. P. Ramaswamy Ayyar, the Diwan (Prime Minister) of Travancore at the time, known for his scholarly contributions and administrative skills. There was even an attempt, though unsuccessful, to invite Albert Einstein as the first Vice-Chancellor. Modeled after the premier universities of the United Kingdom, the University of Kerala retains some of these features, though its affiliating system has evolved distinctively from the British model.
The origins of the University can be traced back to two prominent institutions in Kerala: University College, Thiruvananthapuram, and the Trivandrum Observatory. University College began as Maharaja’s Free School in 1834, established by Maharaja Swathi Thirunal, with Mr. John Roberts, a Christian missionary, as its first headmaster. It evolved into a college in 1866 and was affiliated with Madras University. When the University of Travancore was founded, the college departments were incorporated as university departments, but reverted to college status when the University of Kerala was established in 1957. The University College remains affiliated with the University. The Trivandrum Observatory, founded in 1838 with the internationally renowned scientist John Caldecott FRS as its first Director, was initially part of the Travancore University but was managed as an independent government institution for a time. It is now the oldest institution under the University of Kerala.
