College of Agriculture Vellayani Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala
About College
The College of Agriculture, Vellayani, was established in May 1955 and has since been a prominent center for undergraduate and postgraduate education in agriculture. Originally housed in a historic palace belonging to the former royal family of Travancore, the college quickly gained recognition and achieved parity with leading agricultural institutions in India. It introduced postgraduate programs, offering M.Sc. (Ag.) in 1962 and Ph.D. degrees in 1965. Concurrently, the development of the college farm provided essential field experience for B.Sc. (Ag.) students and supported research for M.Sc. (Ag.) and Ph.D. candidates.
When the Agricultural University of Kerala was founded in 1972, the College of Agriculture, Vellayani, became a major component of the new institution. This integration led to significant advancements in agricultural education and research within the state. The university initially implemented a `trimester' system with `internal evaluation,' which was a novel approach in agricultural education, though it has now transitioned to a `semester' system. Today, the College of Agriculture, Vellayani, stands as a central hub for agricultural research and education in Southern India.
The college places strong emphasis on practical training at the undergraduate level. Students engage in comprehensive farm operations, cultivating key crops on small plots as part of their `work experience' program. In their final year, they receive intensive field training at Krishi Bhavans of the Department of Agriculture and research stations of the University, exposing them to real-world agricultural challenges. This hands-on approach ensures that graduates are well-prepared to tackle field problems effectively in their future careers.
