About College

In 1966, St. Aloysius College received approval from Mysore University to establish an evening college, offering tuition in Arts and Commerce at the pre-university level. This initiative aimed to support individuals who had to discontinue their formal education to pursue employment, enabling them to continue their studies while advancing their careers. Despite having only 160 available seats in its inaugural year, the college received 200 applications, indicating a strong demand for such educational opportunities.

The following year saw the introduction of the B.Com. Degree course, coinciding with the admission of women students, marking a significant step towards inclusivity. Initially, due to operational constraints, the college adopted a policy of admitting students to either the first year B.A. or B.Com. classes alternately. However, in response to student pressure, this policy was abolished in 1971, allowing for annual admissions to both Arts and Commerce degree courses.

Throughout its history, the college has maintained an impressive academic record. While academic achievement, including pass percentages and the number of ranks obtained, is not the sole measure of educational quality, it reflects the dedication and collaborative efforts of both students and faculty.

The Evening College plays a vital role in serving the community of Mangalore and its environs, providing access to collegiate education for hundreds of individuals who would otherwise be unable to pursue higher education. Credit is also due to the students, who, despite the demands of their workday, actively engage in rigorous classroom instruction for nearly three additional hours each evening.
