The Department of Chemical Engineering in National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal was started in the year 1965 with Professor M G Subba Rau as its Founder Head of the Department. With his practical and innovative mind Professor Rau laid a solid foundation to build a very good department to make competent professionals graduating from the institution. A well balanced curriculum having both theory and practice, good infrastructure, well qualified and friendly faculty have been the hall mark of the department right from its inception. When the institution was transformed from Karnataka Regional Engineering College to National Institute of Technology Karnataka, in order to keep pace with the changing needs, a lot of infrastructure, in terms of additional space and modern instruments, have been built utilizing funds available from Ministry of HRD, GOI, TEQIP,TIFAC-CORE, DST,DBT,CSIR,MOEF etc.
The department offers an under graduate program in Chemical Engineering and three post graduate programs with specializations in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Sciences and Technology and Industrial Biotechnology. In addition, M.Tech (Research) and Doctoral programmers are also offered. The department also offers product testing and industrial consultancy.
The students graduating from the department are well placed in profession both in India and abroad. Also, a good number of students pursue higher studies in India as well as in other countries like USA, Canada, Europe, Singapore, South Korea and Australia.
The Department offers one undergraduate, five post-graduate and also research programmes leading to bachelor, master and doctoral degrees. The Department has well experienced faculty, skilled technical staff and well equipped laboratories. It is a recognized QIP centre for training of faculty from other engineering colleges and polytechnics. The Department has been always in the forefront in taking up R&D initiatives and Industrial Consultancy assignments.
Computer Science and Engineering

The Department of Computer Science & Engineering was established in the year 1986. Since then, the department has held a position of pride in NITK. It has consistently fulfilled its role of producing Computer Engineers ready to meet the demands of the IT world. The department has always attracted the best of engineering aspirants from all over the country. It has a well qualified and experienced team of faculty. The Department offers B.Tech., M.Tech., M.Tech.(By Research) and Ph.D. courses in Computer Science and Engineering. The department has adequate facilities to support these teaching activities. Students of the department have access to sufficient high end computing facilities. The Department is also actively involved in various research activities. The facilities are adequate to cater to the needs of Research activities. The department has signed MoU with IBM, Intel, Leeds Metropolitan University and others, for academic collaborative projects.
Electrical and Electronics Engineering

The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) is one of the core departments of National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) right from its inception in 1960 as erstwhile Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC) with the under-graduate programme. The post-graduate programme specialized in Power and Energy Systems started in the year 1992. Research programmes leading to doctoral degree (Ph.D) were introduced in the year 2003. The department has well-equipped state-of-the-art laboratories to augment the coursework and enhance the research potentials. It has a dynamic group of faculties with profound experience in academics, research and industry, dedicated in teaching-learning process and actively engaged in the cutting edge R&D activities like Smart Grid Operation & Control, Power Electronics & Renewable Energy, Biomedical Imaging & Signal Processing, Electric Vehicle & Wireless Power Transfer, Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning, etc. Recognitions like Young Faculty Research Fellowship and POSOCO award for research publications have been received by the faculty. Various externally sponsored research projects funded by DST, SERB, MNRE, CPRI, DELL, CDAC, Infineon, Texas Instruments, Schneider Electric, L&T, Robert Bosch, MeitY etc. has been undergoing in the department over the years. The department also undertakes many consultancy projects from industry and other organisations. A good number of publications including patents, international journals & conferences comes throughout the year from its academicians and students.
The department has academic programs with about 500 undergraduates including first year students and 110 postgraduate students. There are about 80 Ph. D. scholars pursuing research in the department, as full-time and part-time registrants. These academic program’s curriculum offers the students, opportunity for study and research, both theoretical and experimental, in a wide variety of subjects spanning under the traditional disciplines of electrical engineering as well as opens up to the new fields of study. Many senior research students pursue internships and fellowships in prestigious institutes worldwide under Mitacs Global Link Research Internship, etc. Placement statistics points to higher number of the graduate and undergraduate students recruited under various multinational core-companies as well as IT companies from the department. Throughout the department’s history, its faculty, students, and alumni have made major contributions and advancement in fields of academia, research and technology industry.
Electronics and Communication Engineering

The Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) Department was established in the year 1979. The Department offers an Under Graduate program in Electronics and Communication Engineering, PG program in VLSI design, PG program in Signal Processing and Machine Learning (SPML) and a PG program in Communication Engineering and Networks (CEN). In addition to these, it also offers MTech (Research) and PhD programs in the three streams of VLSI design, SPML and CEN which provide a platform for bright graduates and postgraduates to conduct research in state-of-the-art technologies. The Department is also a recognized center under the Quality Improvement Program (QIP) of the Government of India.
The department has been actively involved in several quality enhancement projects such as Project IMPACT, PI-SSS, EENP, UK-INDIA REC Project and SMD-VLSI Project during the last two decades. In recent years, the department has embarked on R&D projects funded by central agencies such as MHRD, DIT, Govt. of India and private industries. In addition, the department is involved in consultancy services to the Indian Railways and major Public Sector Banks. The department possesses a core group of well trained, competent and highly motivated faculty and staff members who have imbibed and adopted some of the best academic practices being followed in India and abroad. The department houses a centre for Wireless Sensor Networks to promote research in the area of sensor networks. The department has initiated and maintained a continuous dialog with several leading industries and R&D organizations. As a consequence, it is emerging as a Centre of Excellence in the country for UG/PG studies and research.
The B.Tech. in ECE at NITK is one of the most sought after programs in the country and attracts top 1% students qualifying in the JEE (Main) exam. The M.Tech. programs are also equally sought after by the students qualifying in GATE examination. The students of the department have been consistently securing top ranks in national competitive examinations such as GATE and CAT. Students from the department are regularly recruited by several National and International companies working in core ECE domain, Indian Public Sector companies as well as Multinational companies working in the IT and Financial sectors. Texas Instruments, Intel, ARM, Broadcom, Nvidia are some of the core sector companies who have recruited graduates of the department in the recent past. Securing close to 100% placement of eligible undergraduate students is a regular annual occurrence. About 10% of the graduates pursue post graduate and doctoral studies in the top-rated Universities in India and abroad. Our students have consistently secured admissions to top rated institutions such as University of California at Berkeley, Stanford University, Columbia University, Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, ETH Zurich, NUS Singapore (to name a few) in the recent past.
The major goal of the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering is to produce highly knowledgeable, competent and resourceful young engineers who can perform well in a wide variety of job profiles. To achieve this, curriculum provides a strong foundation in both the analytic and technological aspects of ECE. It also provides ample opportunities to students to work on mini-projects, develop communication skills, explore internship opportunities in industry and world-class universities and take part in national and international design contests.
Established in the year 2000, the Department of Information Technology is the youngest among the 14 departments at NITK Surathkal. Since then, it has grown to be a center for excellence, innovation, and research with dedicated faculty & staff, highly motivated students, state-of-the-art facilities, and an innovative teaching-learning environment. The department offers two undergraduate programmes - B.Tech.(IT) and B.Tech.(Artificial Intelligence) and one post-graduate programme M.Tech.(IT), M.Tech. in IT (by Research) and Ph.D. programmes are also offered by the department. The B.Tech(IT) programme offered by the Department received a maximum Tier 1 accreditation level of 6 years from the National Board of Accreditation (2022-2023 to 2027-28 up to 30-06-2028). Earlier, the programme received Tier 1 NBA accreditation for 6+1 years w.e.f. 01-07-2014 (further extended for 1 year up to 30-06-2022) and for 3 years in 2008.
The Department has demonstrated its significant potential through multiple successful startups, high-quality scholarly publications, research projects, patents, and other initiatives. Several research & consultancy projects are currently underway as part of various grants/MoUs with reputed industry and academic organizations. Our students have consistently achieved excellent placements year after year and have demonstrated a high level of success at pursuing post-graduate and doctoral studies at leading universities worldwide (as per QS World University Rankings). Many NITK-IT graduates are currently at universities of repute like Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Carnegie Mellon University, Yale, Cornell, Columbia, Duke University, Purdue, Georgia Tech, and in the IITs and IIMs.
Mathematical and Computational Sciences

The Department of Mathematics (today called, the Department of Mathematical and Computational Sciences) started along with the institute(1960). The Department of Mathematical and Computational Sciences, formerly known as Department of Mathematics, is one of the oldest departments of NITK. The department initially catered to the needs of the UG and PG Engineering Mathematics and subsequently, in 1988-89, introduced two PG programmes, namely, the Master of Computer Applications (MCA) and Master of Technology (M.Tech.) Computational Mathematics (CMA) (earlier named Master of Technology (M.Tech.) in Systems Analysis and Computer Applications).
The PG programme, Master of Technology (M.Tech.) in Computational Mathematics (CMA) is replaced with Master of Technology (M.Tech.) in Computational and Data Science(CDS) since 2019.
A new UG programme, Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) in Computational and Data Science(CDS) has commenced from the year 2022.
MACS Department is known for its variety of courses in the areas of Algebra, Analysis, Applied Mathematics and Statistics. It not only caters to the needs of the other 13 departments of NITK but also offers its own master’s program in computer applications and computational mathematics. People from across the country come and enroll to the PhD program with faculties having expertise in the areas of Computational Systems, Nonlinear Analysis, Functional Analysis, Real Analysis, Number Theory & Cryptography, Numerical Analysis, Graph Theory, Optimization, Fluid Dynamics, Computer applications, Image processing and many more. The strength of department lies in the blend of 26 (19 Full Time+ 8 on contract) faculty members in not only pure and applied areas of mathematics and statistics but also in the area of computer science (hence the name Computational Sciences) ably supported by a Technical Officer and 6 non-teaching staff. A department can be assessed in terms of research and development by seeing number of Research Scholars / PhD students enrolled to the PhD program. Currently, 44 full-time research scholars and many part-time research scholars are working in frontier areas of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Furthermore, the department offers various elective courses to the requirement of other departments such as Number Theory & Cryptography, Probability Theory, Linear Algebra, Optimization Techniques, Random Processes, Computer Networks and such others.
Department of MACS was recognized as Study Centre for MCA and BCA Programmes of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in 1999.
Established in the year 1960, the Department of Mechanical Engineering has traversed the path of knowledge dissemination and generation. The department feels proud about producing over 6500 Mechanical Engineering graduates to serve the Nation. Over these glorious years of its journey, it has carved a niche for itself in the key areas of teaching, research, consultancy, administration and community services. The Department of Mechanical Engineering gives priority to update the Mechanical Engineering education, primarily driven by the dynamics of technological advances and sustainable development and the curriculum is revised on a continuous basis with active involvement of industry, alumni, research organizations and other stakeholders. The department offers B.Tech, M.Tech and Ph.D. programmes and caters to more than 715 B.Tech. students, 150 M.Tech. students and 100 Ph.D. Scholars.
Metallurgical and Materials Engineering

The Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, one of the oldest Departments at National Institute of Technology, was established in the year 1965 with an objective to impart education and training in Metallurgical & Materials Engineering. The Department owes a lot to the vision of its founder Head, Prof. T. Ramchandran. The Department is very active in research activities and keeps abreast with the state-of-the-art developments in Engineering and Technology. The Department offers one UG program, three PG programs, master's by research, and PhD. Students are given intensive training in conventional metallurgy, involving both practical and theory. Starting with basic subjects, students are taught application oriented courses. The curriculum includes advanced topics in Metallurgy and Materials Engineering. Apart from undergoing industrial training, students are required to carry out the project work as part of their curriculum. Our alumni are employed in various fields, such as industries, academia, R&D institutes, government and public sector organizations. The department has been active in carrying out funded R&D projects and many facilities for research have been added in recent years. The Department has shown strong presence in the areas of corrosion, physical metallurgy, solidification, quenching, powder metallurgy, electrospinning of polymeric and ceramic nanofibers, metal joining and forming. Some of the advanced facilities include TEM, SEM, XRD, FTIR spectrometer, contact angle meter, optical microscopes and Instron. Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Association (MMEA) takes care of various students' activities of the Department and brings out an in house magazine NITKAST. The department library holds about 750 text books, back volumes and journals. The Department has an excellent academic atmosphere with qualified and motivated young faculty and hard working staff. The Surathkal Chapter of Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) regularly conducts technical meetings, workshops, industrial tours and visits for enriching the technical knowledge of students. During the last 54 years about 1420 graduates, 880 post graduates and 58 Ph.D. scholars have graduated from this department and have occupied positions of eminence in industries, R&D organizations and academic institutions
The Department of Mining Engineering was established in the year 1984 and around 630 undergraduates passed out from the portals of the department till 2021-2022. Several girls obtained their B. Tech Mining Degree from this department. The Department also offers M.Tech (Research) program in Rock Excavation Technology and Management and Ph.D. in Mining Engineering. The department celebrated its Silver Jubilee during 2009-10.
The department has on its roll four Professors, three Associate Professors, one Assistant Professors and one Temporary Faculty. The faculty members have the right blend of industry, teaching, research, consultancy, and administrative experience resulting in multi-dimensional and multi-disciplinary activities within the institute and outside. The faculties of the department have received several awards and honours from Government and reputed Professional Bodies. Some of them are serving as Editors of National and International Journals and Reviewers of several Professional Journals in their area of expertise. All the faculty of the department visited reputed Universities and research centers in the USA, Australia, France, Thailand, and South Korea for research interaction and paper presentations. The department is also engaged in teaching inter-disciplinary subjects and guiding B.Tech and M.Tech projects which are inter-disciplinary in nature.
The department received grants from The Hutti Gold Mines Company, Uranium Corporation of India, and Neyveli Lignite Corporation for instituting Gold Medals for the best outgoing students of Mining Engineering which are being named as “HGML Gold Medal”, “UCIL Gold Medal” and “NLC Gold Medal” respectively. Doddanavar Brothers Pvt. Ltd. has instituted the “Silver Medal” for the second-best outgoing student of the department. The Department is actively involved in student activities through the Society of Mining Engineers, NITK Chapter, and successfully organized 1st SME NITK Annual Convention on 06th-07th March 2020, 2nd SME NITK Annual Convention on 05th-06th March 2021, and 3rd SME NITK Annual Convention on 11th-12th March 2022 and 4th SME NITK Annual Convention on 04th – 06th October 2023.
