Established in 1945, Karnataka Polytechnic in Mangalore stands as a Government Polytechnic dedicated to delivering high-quality training to deserving students, equipping them with the skills needed to excel as technicians in diverse sectors such as industry, services, and entrepreneurship. Offering regular three-year diploma programs across eight disciplines, Karnataka Polytechnic also extends its expertise to provide continuing education opportunities for adults in technician education through a range of non-formal, need-based courses.

Our 1st batch of Civil Engineering Branch admission started in the year 1946. At the beginning the course was named under vocational training as LCE, later it was redefined as Diploma in Civil Engineering. Presently an intake of 63 students for the first-year course. It has been designed for three years under semester scheme of study; each year composed of two semesters to a total of six semesters of study. Now the courses are redesigned in the work of Outcome Based Education (OBE) to the need of the current Civil Engineering field requirement. The approach towards the study is to fulfil the current requirements in the civil engineering profession.
The department is well equipped with all the facilities needed to train the students both theoretically and practically. Under the department, civil consultancy centre was started in the year 1994 under Continuing Education CELL(CIICT), Later monitored by CCTEK. Now it has been monitored independently by Civil Consultancy Centre of the institute. Under this quality control check related to the constructional material and other civil engineering related works will be done for both government departments (Central and State) and private consultancy agencies.

The Department of Electrical and Electronics, is one of the oldest Departments at Karnataka (Govt.) polytechnic, Mangalore. Established in the year 1945, the department has well qualified; passionate and dedicated staff. With a current annual intake of 63 students from all parts of Karnataka, the staff to student ratio now stands at a plausible 1:7.
The Course at the department, is a healthy amalgam of Power Engineering, Electronics and Computers; comprehensive and in keeping modern trends of Electrical and Electronics Engineering education. Course pattern at the department is planned to keep the students up to date with the recent trends and shifting technological paradigms, making them industry ready. The average experience of the faculty is very high.

Karnataka (Govt) Polytechnic was the first polytechnic to start three-year Diploma course in chemical engineering, in our state in year 1975, and it was only one polytechnic, which was offering Diploma in chemical Engg. up to 1984. Right from the inception our department has unique distinction in teaching and learning process, quality education, academic activities, co-curricular and extra - curricular activities. Very good Infrastructure facilities are provided for imparting quality practical training, by inculcating skills among the students in handling and operation of equipment’s in the field of heat transfer ,mass transfer, momentum transfer, mechanical operation and in Technical analysis. through well-established laboratories to cater present industrial needs. Good class rooms, experienced faculty members, creates good teaching learning atmosphere in the department, which leads to get 95- 100 % academic performance every year. This department provides needful exposure and training as per the present industrial requirements. Placements for Diploma Chemical Engg. Students will be more than 80%. The appropriate submission and presentation of the projects to the funding agencies like WORLD BANK/ MADROBS, we have been able to get funds for the development of infrastructure of our department. As a part of internal revenue generation, Chemical Engg. Department also provides need-based training programmes for MCF, MRPL and SEZ employees.

The Electronics & Communication Engineering Department was started in the year 1994, diploma engineering program under DTE, Bangalore and approved by AICTE, New Delhi. The programs offered by the department are the most sought-after ones by Diploma Online Admission (conducted by Karnataka Examination Authority) top rank holders from across the state and country. Diploma programs is outcome based, structured to meet the needs of Industry and Research. The program contents are upgraded with the involvement of industry and reputed research institutions.
A total of 4 permanent full time and 6 part-time experienced faculty members (all graduates and two of them with MTech), support four core specializations (Analog and Digital Circuits, wireless & wireline Communications, Image/Multimedia processing and Large Area and Flexible electronics) in the Department. Academics at diploma level is sustained with a staff to student ratio of 1:15 and well supported by licensed version/open source of basic software tools in over 15 computers. The curriculum includes a strong self-study component and mini projects at all levels so as to develop the students independent analytical abilities.

The Mechanical Engineering Programme was started in the year 1946 with an annual intake of 40. At present, the annual intake is 63 (60+3(SNQ)). This diploma engineering program comes under Department of Technical Education, Bangalore and approved by AICTE, New Delhi. The admission to this program is carried out by Department of Technical Education through On-line Admission. Top rank holders across the state prefer this program in this institution.
The Mechanical Engineering Programme is outcome based and structured to cater the needs of Industry and Society. The program contents are upgraded with the interaction with industry, alumni and reputed research organizations. A total of 8 full time and 3 part-time experienced faculty members support the programme.
