About College

The Government College of Nursing Thiruvananthapuram is a pioneering institution for nursing education in Kerala, training professionals at various levels to meet the challenges of the nursing field. It was the first in the state to offer BSc and MSc Nursing programs and serves as a PhD study center recognized by the Indian Nursing Council and the University of Kerala.

The college provides education for general nursing and midwifery students, post-basic diploma students in various specialties, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate nursing students. Graduates of the college have gone on to become successful professionals around the globe, bringing honor to their alma mater.

The institution emphasizes the importance of a solid understanding of basic scientific principles in nursing, along with effective communication, interpersonal skills, teaching, and research. These foundations are essential, as nursing is a profession deeply influenced by scientific and technological advancements, whether serving in hospitals or communities.

MILESTONES

1943- Govt. College of Nursing Thiruvananthapuram, had its origin as school of nursing attached to General Hospital, Thiruvanthapuram.

1954-The School of Nursing was shifted to Medical College campus.

1960-Diploma programme in Teaching and Administration of 11 months duration started at University level with an annual intake of 10 students.

1963- School of Nursing was upgraded to College of Nursing with the starting of Post Basic B.Sc (N) for diploma Nurses which was the first of its kind in South East Asia.

1972- Four year degree programme in Nursing (B.Sc Nursing) was started at University level with an annual intake of 25 students. The present college building was inaugurated on 12th April 1972 by Dr.K.Balaraman Nair, the then Director of Health Services.

1983- Admission to B.Sc. Nursing programme was made through common medical and engineering entrance examination of Kerala with 25 admissions, out of which 3 seats were reserved for male candidates.

1987-This year is remarkable in the history of nursing education in Kerala with the starting of post graduate programme in nursing (M.Sc Nursing) in Medical Surgical specialty with an annual intake of four students and selection was based on merit.

1990-MSc Nursing admission was made through Entrance Examination

1992- BSc Nursing seat enhanced from 25 to 50 with 6 seats reserved for boys.

1996- Three more M Sc Nursing Specialities (Child Health Nursing, Obstetrics & Gynecological Nursing & Community Health Nursing) started with 4 students per speciality.

1998- Manpower empowerment in Trauma Care in co-operation with Loma Linda University, USA. Male Candidates were admitted to GNM Programme.

1999- Started Global Health Exchange Programme in Nursing with Karolinska Institute, Sweden.

2002- Admission to BSC Nursing was made irrespective of gender difference. Annual Intake of BSc Nursing Students was enhanced to 60. Faculty Exchange Programme under Linnaeus Palme Exchange (LPE) started.

2004- Seats for male candidates were enhanced to 6 for GNM programme.

2005- New Syllabus for GNM programme (3½ years including 6 months internship) implemented. College of Nursing was recognized as study center for PhD in Nursing as part of National Consortium, India Nursing Council. MSc Nursing seat enhanced from 16 to 28.

2006 -Three MSc Nursing students & two faculty visited Sweden as part of LPE programme. Rs 1 crore was sanctioned under PMSSY Scheme for constructing PG Block.

2007- Launched website for College of Nursing, Thiruvanathapuram

2008- Annual intake of BSc Nursing Students was enhanced to 75. Recognized as Research Center under University of Kerala.

2010 -Post Basic BSc. Nursing Programme restarted. BSc. Nursing, Post Basic BSc. Nursing & MSc. Nursing programme were affiliated to Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS)

2011–One year Post Basic Diploma Programmes started in four specialties, such as Critical Care Nursing, Oncology Nursing, Nurse Midwifery Practitioner and Emergency and Disaster Nursing. A new PG block was inaugurated under the Prime Ministers Swasthya Suraksha Yogana (PMSSY) scheme.

2012- Inauguration of the New Block in the campus.

2014- A mutual recognition agreement (MRA) was made between Singapore Government and Government of India which recognized this college as an Institution of Higher Learning in Nursing Education along with three more prestigious institutions in India.

2015 – Syllabus for GNM course was amended as per INC recommendation. Duration of course was again shortened to 3 years. Exchange programme in nursing with West Chester University, Pennsylvania, USA commenced.

2016- Revised syllabus for BSc Nursing by Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) was implemented. Inaugurated a multipurpose hall and a new conference hall.

Course Details

PhD in Nursing

The institution was recognized as a study centre of National Consortium of Ph.D in Nursing under Indian Nursing Council in 2005 with the support of WHO also affiliated with Rajeev Gandhi University. Students have the facility to attend classes and presentations through video conferencing. This institution was recognized as Ph.D study centre of University of Kerala in 2008. Many candidates are pursuing Ph.D and several candidates are awarded Doctorate in Nursing. Works are under process for recognising our institution as KUHS Ph.D study centre.

M.Sc (Nursing)

The post graduate programme in Govt. College of Nursing, Thiruvanathapuram, was started in the year 1987 in Medical Surgical Nursing speciality with an annual intake of 4. Now the college offers Msc Nursing in four specialities – Medical Surgical Nursing, Child Health Nursing, Community Health Nursing, Obstetric and Gynaecological Nursing- with an annual intake of 28. Aim of the postgraduate programme in nursing is to prepare nurses to assume responsibilities as Clinical Nurse Specialists, Nurse Practitioners, Consultants, Educators, Researchers and Administrators in a wide variety of professional settings. The duration of course is 2 years. Students are eligible for monthly stipend throughout the course.

B.Sc (Nursing)

The graduate programme in Govt. College of Nursing, Thiruvanathapuram, was started in the year 1972 under Kerala University with an annual intake 25 students on merit basis. Now the college has an annual intake of 78 students per batch out of this 3 seats are reserved for students from Jammu & Kashmir under PMSSS. The aim of the undergraduate nursing program is to:

  • Prepare graduates to assume responsibilities as professional, competent nurses and midwives in providing promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative services.
  • Prepare nurses who can make independent decisions to protect the rights and facilitate individuals and groups in pursuit of health.
  • Prepare nurses to function in the hospital, community nursing services, and conduct research studies in the areas of nursing practice. They are also expected to assume the role of teacher, supervisor, and manager in a clinical/ public health setting/ school of nursing.

The duration of course is 4 years. After the successful completion of the course students are eligible for one year compulsory Nursing Service with stipend.

Candidates who have passed Higher Secondary Examination of the Board of Higher Secondary Education, Kerala, or examinations recognized equivalent thereto, with 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English put together, are eligible.

Post basic BSc Nursing

The post basic B.Sc Nursing programme in Govt. College of Nursing, Thiruvanathapuram, was started in the year 1963 as the School of Nursing was upgraded to College of Nursing, which was the first of its kind in South East Asia. But the programme has stopped temporarily and restarted in the year 2010 under Kerala University of Health Sciences with an annual intake of 30, out of this 10 seats are reserved for service candidates (on deputation). The duration of course is 2 years. Students are eligible for monthly stipend in the second year of the course.

Candidate should have passed plus two / equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as optional subjects. They should have also passed the qualifying examination ie General Nursing and Midwifery Course, from an institution recognized by the Indian Nursing Council and concerned State Councils with minimum of 50% marks in aggregate. Admission to the course is based on the marks obtained in the entrance examination conducted by the Director, LBS Centre for Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram. 

General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM)

The diploma programme in General Nursing and Midwifery started in 1943 at School of Nursing attached to General Hospital and was shifted to Medical College campus in 1954. The college in collaboration with Priyadarsini Institute of Para Medical Sciences (PIPMS) offers diploma programme for students of special component (SC) category. The course has an annual intake of 30 students out of which 6 seats are reserved for male candidates. The course is under the Kerala Nurses and Midwives council. The aim of this nursing program is to:

  • To prepare nurses with a sound educational programme in nursing to enable them to function as efficient members of the health care team, beginning with the competencies for first level positions in all kinds of health care settings.
  • To help nurses make maximum contribution to the society as useful and productive individuals, citizens as well as efficient nurses.
  • To serve as a base for further professional education and specialization in nursing.
  • To prepare nurses to keep pace with latest professional and technological developments and use these for providing nursing care service.

The duration of course is 3 years. Minimum education eligibility criteria for admission are plus two or equivalent examination with 40% marks from any recognized board. However science is preferable.

PBD Nursing

The graduate programme in Govt. College of Nursing, Thiruvanathapuram, was started in the year 1972 under Kerala University with an annual intake 25 students on merit basis. Now the college has an annual intake of 75 students per batch. The aim of the undergraduate nursing program is to:

Candidates who have passed the B.Sc. Nursing (Regular) Degree Course/Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing (Regular) course/General Nursing and Midwifery Course with 50% marks, from an institution recognised by the Indian Nursing Council and the concerned State Nursing Council are eligible for admission. The duration of the course shall be one Academic year (12 months) from the date of commencement of the course. The course is under Kerala Nurses and Midwifery Council.The syllabus and scheme of examination is as per Indian Nursing council.
