About College
Founded in 1917 by Vaidyaratnam P.S. Varier, the Aryavaidya Patasala initially operated in Calicut under the Arya Vaidya Samajam, supported financially by Arya Vaidya Sala, Kottakkal. It offered a four-year diploma course in Ayurveda. In 1924, the Patasala moved to Kottakkal to provide practical training at the Arya Vaidya Sala Charitable Hospital. The original Arya Vaidyan course was replaced by a Diploma in Ayurvedic Medicine (D.A.M) in 1958, and in 1959, the institution was upgraded to an Ayurveda College with the D.A.M course, which included a six-month internship.
In 1972, the college affiliated with the University of Calicut and introduced the Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine (B.A.M) course, a five-year program with a six-month internship. By 1979-80, the curriculum evolved to include the Ayurvedacharya (B.A.M.S) course, lasting 4.5 years followed by a one-year internship. The college now offers the B.A.M.S degree and five postgraduate courses: Ayurvedic Psychology & Psychiatry, Ayurvedic Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, Ayurvedic Social & Preventive Medicine, Ayurvedic Pharmacology, and Panchakarma.
Since 2010, undergraduate and postgraduate admissions have been affiliated with the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS). The Arya Vaidya Samajam was dissolved in 1976, and the Kerala Ayurvedic Studies and Research Society (K.A.S.R.S) took over the administration. The K.A.S.R.S is governed by a board including State Government members and Arya Vaidya Sala nominees, with daily operations managed by an Executive Director and a Chief Executive Officer.
