Vijaya College, Bangalore: A Legacy of Accessible Science, Arts & Commerce Education Since 1946

Established in 1946, evolving from the Bangalore Intermediate College (founded in 1944 by the BHS Managing Committee), Vijaya College has been a cornerstone of accessible higher education in Bangalore for over 76 years. Founded by a group of visionaries including Rao Bahadur Prof B. Venkateshachar, Prof V.T. Srinivasan, and others, the college emerged to address the limited opportunities for science education in the city during the early 1940s. Guided by the mission of providing excellent education to deserving students, Vijaya College, under the BHS Higher Education Society, continues to uphold this commitment.

The BHS Managing Committee, currently led by Secretary Sri. N B Bhat and President Sri. G. V Viswanath, has been instrumental in the growth and development of Vijaya College, striving to make it one of the premier learning centers in Karnataka. The contributions of numerous prominent educationists over the years have been invaluable in shaping the institution's success.

Strategic Location and Growth:

Initially located in the Vokkaligara Sangha Campus, Vishveswarapuram, Vijaya College moved to its present 450 ft X 500 ft campus in 1953. Recognizing the evolving needs of students, degree classes were introduced in 1956, starting with B.Sc. (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) and subsequently adding other science combinations and B.Com in 1970.

Adapting to Modern Educational Needs:

During the 1980s, Vijaya College proactively responded to the growing demand for job-oriented applied sciences by introducing new B.Sc. combinations such as Physics, Mathematics & Electronics; Physics, Mathematics & Computer Science; and Chemistry, Botany/Zoology & Sericulture. This period also witnessed significant infrastructural expansion and a substantial increase in student intake for pre-university (PU) courses. The BHS Higher Education Society proudly served over 30,000 students in Vijaya College in the two decades leading up to the bifurcation of the Degree and PU colleges in 2002, as per the Government of Karnataka's policy.

Expanding Program Offerings and Infrastructure:

Since 2007-08, Vijaya College has further diversified its academic offerings to include contemporary science combinations like Biotechnology, Microbiology, Genetics, and Biochemistry, alongside professional courses such as BCA and BBM. Correspondingly, infrastructural facilities have been continuously upgraded to meet these new requirements. The college expanded its postgraduate programs with the introduction of M.Sc. in Mathematics (2011-12), M.Sc. in Physics (2012-13), and M.Sc. in Chemistry and M.Com (2013-14).

A Full-Fledged Undergraduate and Postgraduate Institution:

Today, Vijaya College stands as a well-established undergraduate and postgraduate degree college with a student strength of approximately 2600. Guided by the BHS Higher Education Society (BHSHES) Managing Committee, the college remains committed to its founding principles of providing quality education at an affordable cost, catering to students from all backgrounds.

Student Support and Welfare:

Vijaya College is dedicated to student well-being, offering a student-friendly atmosphere and efficient placement services. To enhance students' skills, the college provides Add-on courses in Languages, Arts, Science, and Commerce, as well as self-financed certificate courses in areas like Tally, Web Designing, and Advanced Excel. Active cells and associations, including Anti-ragging, Anti-Sexual Harassment, Women Empowerment, Alumni, NCC, NSS, Red Cross, Human Rights, Red Ribbon, Counselling, Scouts and Guides, and Yoga, contribute to a holistic learning environment. The college also supports students through fee concessions, installment payment options, merit and endowment scholarships, awards, and prizes. Regular parent-teacher meetings foster strong communication and collaboration.
