St Joseph's University is a Jesuit institution located in the heart of Bengaluru. Originally established in 1882 by the Paris Foreign Mission Fathers, its management was transferred to the Society of Jesus (Jesuit order) in 1937.

St Joseph's University has a history of pioneering academic achievements in Karnataka:
- 1882: Established by Paris Foreign Mission Fathers.
- 1937: Management handed over to the Jesuit order.
- 1986: Became the first affiliated college in Karnataka to offer postgraduate programmes.
- 1988: Became the first college in Karnataka to establish a Research Centre.
- 2005: Was one of five colleges in the state to be awarded academic autonomy.
- July 2, 2022: Received University status.
- September 27, 2022: Inaugurated as India's first Public-Private-Partnership University by the Honourable President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu.
