Emphasizing the value of experiential learning, the curriculum seamlessly integrates service-oriented initiatives. It equips students for the rigors of professional Social Work practice.

Central to the program is the Social Work Practicum, a pivotal element designed to bridge theory and practice. Through immersive experiences such as surveys, street theater, field visits, internships, and training in Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA), students gain firsthand insights into real-world scenarios. Collaboration with governmental agencies exposes them to pertinent policies and initiatives, facilitating community outreach.

Engagement with Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) broadens students' exposure to diverse challenges and intervention strategies. The program instills values of altruism and service while honing leadership and social acumen, nurturing tomorrow's leaders. By enhancing core values, ethics, and practical skills, it empowers students for impactful professional endeavors in the field of social work.

Bachelor of Vocational Education (B.Voc)

The School of Social Work, in partnership with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in Mumbai, established the School of Vocational Education (SVE) aimed at delivering tangible and immediate support to uplift the lives of marginalized and disadvantaged youth. This initiative addresses the gaps left by the conventional school education system by offering tailored vocational training programs.

Under the banner of TISS-SVE, the adopted strategy is known as the Work Integrated Training program, aligned with the National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) sanctioned by UGC & AICTE. Pioneering in India, this approach prioritizes job-specific skills over a generalized education, marking a significant departure from traditional practices.

The programmes offering employable skills are
  • Bachelor of Vocation (B.Voc) in Early Child Development (3 years)
  • Bachelor of Vocation (B.Voc) in Child Protection (3 years) (Multiple entry & exit system for the B.Voc programmes)
  • Diploma/certificate programme in Geriatric Care (1 year)

Student eligibility criteria: SSC and PUC

All certificates/diplomas/degrees shall be awarded by TISS in its capacity as Deemed University

MSW

Master of Social Work (M.S.W.)

In 1960, the School of Social Work launched its inaugural diploma program in social work, initially welcoming a humble trio of students. By 1967, the institution evolved into a postgraduate hub for social work education, forging ties with the University of Mysore. This transformation was spurred by a collective recognition of the imperative to fortify familial and communal ties, a vision ardently championed by our esteemed founding principal, the late Dr. Olinda Pereira. Today, our college boasts national acclaim as a premier destination for social work education, earning the distinguished 12th spot in India Today's rankings of top social work colleges as of July 6, 2020.

M.Sc

1) Master of Science in Counselling (M.Sc. C)

Mental health challenges can significantly hinder someone's ability to live a satisfying life, affecting their relationships, family dynamics, and career prospects. Counseling plays a pivotal role in guiding individuals toward necessary shifts in their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. This collaborative process involves a compassionate counselor who supports clients without judgment, aiding them in articulating their concerns, setting achievable goals, and devising strategies to attain them.

Today, there is a pressing demand for counseling across various demographics, including children, teenagers, families, healthcare settings, and correctional facilities. A comprehensive two-year Master's program in Counseling, focused on fostering both professional and personal growth, is an ideal choice for those dedicated to promoting the well-being of individuals, families, and communities. This program is tailored to equip aspiring practitioners with advanced counseling skills, incorporating contemporary approaches while preparing students to deliver, innovate, and sustain high-quality community services.

2) M.Sc. CFS (Criminology & Forensic Science)

Criminology, as a discipline, delves into the societal intricacies surrounding crime. It explores the perpetrators, their motivations, the repercussions of their actions, and strategies to prevent such occurrences. Drawing from a multitude of fields like philosophy, anthropology, biology, and psychology, criminology sheds light on human behavior, communication patterns, and societal structures.

Complementing this social analysis is forensic science, the application of scientific methodologies to legal matters, primarily within criminal investigations. This unique Postgraduate Programme in Criminology and Forensic Science merges these distinct yet interrelated domains, recognizing their indispensable role in today's world.

Contemporary society grapples with a surge in delinquency, exacerbated by the exploitation of new technologies and modern innovations by criminals. Traditional crimes persist alongside emerging threats like cyber atrocities, financial frauds, and terrorism, posing challenges to security measures. To effectively address these issues, a proactive approach is imperative. Enhanced academic awareness and research endeavors are pivotal in mitigating various forms of criminal activity.

Criminologists and forensic experts must remain vigilant and adaptive to outmaneuver criminals. Academic training, particularly in utilizing digital technologies for crime prevention and detection, holds significant promise for law enforcement agencies and society as a whole.

Recognizing the pressing need, Dr. B Ashoka spearheaded the establishment of the M.Sc. in Criminology and Forensic Science in 2011-2012. This program aims to equip students with comprehensive knowledge and research skills across various domains, including criminology, forensic science, cyber forensics, and criminal justice systems. Through rigorous academic training, it endeavors to empower individuals to tackle the evolving landscape of crime effectively.
