Established in 1955, Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore commenced its journey utilizing the clinical resources of Government Wenlock Hospital and Government Lady Goschen Hospital. In 1961, the pre-clinical section was inaugurated within Mangalore.
In 1977, Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore gained autonomy, marking a significant milestone. Besides the government hospitals, the college boasts its teaching hospital, KMC Hospital, Attavar, established in 1992, with a substantial bed capacity of 500.
Infrastructural excellence is a hallmark, with modern amenities meeting international standards. Seven spacious, air-conditioned lecture halls equipped with advanced audio-visual aids, including multimedia projectors, facilitate immersive learning. Additionally, a fully air-conditioned library accommodating about 500 students offers internet access, housing an extensive collection of over 10,000 books and subscribing to more than 350 journals annually.
In 2001, the Centre for Basic Sciences was inaugurated at Bejai, catering to first-year students, featuring well-appointed lecture halls and hostels for both genders. Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore provides hostel accommodation across nine facilities, including five dedicated to female students.
The institution's commitment to education is evident through its Medical Education Unit, conducting orientation programs for students, interns, and postgraduates, while also furnishing teaching faculty with resource materials.
Recognition by the Medical Council of India in 1958 paved the way for global acknowledgment, including recognition by the General Medical Council of Great Britain and the Malaysian Medical Council. KMC, Mangalore, distinguished itself by introducing new programs, fostering faculty research, and enhancing student amenities. Notably, it stands as the first college developed under a private partnership model in medical education and healthcare delivery, presently ranking among the top 25 medical colleges nationwide and boasting the highest number of ICMR STS awards.
Acknowledged as one of the 20 International Medical Schools by the Educational Commission for Foreign Graduates (ECFMG) for its electronic credentials verification program, Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, has witnessed graduates from 45 countries, with its degrees recognized worldwide.
