Bangalore University: A Premier Institution of Higher Learning in India's IT Capital
Established in July 1964 as an outgrowth of the University of Mysore, Bangalore University is strategically located in Bangalore, the "I.T. Capital of India." Initially formed by the city's esteemed Central College (CC) and University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE), the university was primarily established to encompass institutions of higher learning within metropolitan Bangalore and the districts of Bangalore, Kolar, and Tumkur (which later became a separate university).
A Legacy of Academic Growth and Innovation:
Bangalore University quickly expanded, introducing Honours Courses in 1965-66 in disciplines like Botany, Chemistry, Economics, English, Geology, Kannada, Mathematics, and Zoology. These three-year programs, offered at the University's Post Graduate Departments, attracted bright minds and provided a pathway to postgraduate studies. Since its inception, Bangalore University has experienced significant growth in size and academic diversity, now encompassing a vast network of affiliated colleges and PG centers offering a rich array of programs.
The Sprawling Jnana Bharathi Campus:
In 1973, the university moved to its expansive 1100-acre campus, ‘Jnana Bharathi’ (JB), which now houses key administrative offices (Vice Chancellor, Registrar, Registrar (Evaluation), Finance Officer), a multitude of postgraduate departments, directorates, centers of higher learning, the NSS Bhavan, an outdoor stadium, and essential support services. The University Law College (established in 1948) and the College of Physical Education (established in 1959) are also located within the JB Campus.
Commitment to Social Relevance and Research:
Bangalore University has also established significant centers like Gandhi Bhavan, the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Study and Research Centre, and the Centre for Study on Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy, demonstrating its commitment to social relevance. Having completed over fifty years of impactful existence, Bangalore University is recognized as one of Asia's largest universities.
Accreditation and Rankings:
Bangalore University's commitment to quality is underscored by its consistent NAAC accreditation, first achieving Five Star Status in 2002 and subsequently being re-accredited with ‘A’ Grade in 2008 and November 2016 (Cycles 2 & 3).
International rankings also recognize the university's standing. According to the QS University Ranking: BRICS-2016, Bangalore University was ranked 151st among BRICS nations. The Hansa Research Survey 2016, published in THE WEEK, placed Bangalore University at No. 15 among the Top Multi-disciplinary Universities at the All India level, No. 9 among Top State Multi-disciplinary Universities, No. 5 in the South Zone, and No. 1 in Karnataka.
Academic Structure and Diverse Programs:
Academically, the university comprises six faculties: Arts, Science, Commerce & Management, Education, Law, and Engineering. It oversees 48 Post Graduate Departments, a postgraduate Centre at Kolar, four University colleges, a vast network of 684 affiliated colleges, and numerous other centers and directorates for higher learning and research. Currently, the university offers 50 postgraduate courses, along with employment-oriented diploma and certificate programs, and has launched innovative Five-Year Integrated Courses in Biological Sciences.
Reaching Out to the Community:
Bangalore University actively engages with the community through endowment and extension lectures, and disseminates knowledge on contemporary issues through its Prasaranga division's publications.

Bangalore University has forged significant Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with universities and institutions of national and international repute. With a student population exceeding three lakhs, the university is dedicated to providing access, promoting expansion, and ensuring excellence in higher education.
