Established in 2010 by the Azim Premji Foundation, Azim Premji University in Bangalore emerged from a deep commitment to improving the quality of elementary education in government schools across India. The Azim Premji Foundation, since its inception in the early 2000s, has worked in close partnership with the government, aiming for profound and institutional-level improvements in India's education system.

Over the years, the Foundation established district-level institutes dedicated to enhancing the capabilities of teachers, school leaders, teacher educators, and administrators within the public education sector.

A decade of dedicated grassroots work provided critical insights into the real challenges and opportunities present on the ground. This experience highlighted a significant and pressing need for highly qualified professionals within the social sector.

Responding directly to this crucial need, Azim Premji University was founded in 2010. The university began by offering two core programs in education and development, alongside specialized courses designed for working professionals seeking to enhance their skills and impact within the field.
